I agree that Bradt books are good, and I particularly like the Cadogan series, also published in the UK. I especially like those written by the team of Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls, who seem to specialise in Italy and Spain. But I find all the Cadogan guides good, filled with little places I would never have found on my own and refreshingly free of the gushing drivel about places we've all already heard about over and over again.

The Bradt guides are in a class of their own mainly because the are written by experts who visit the locations and are not tied to a rigid pattern.

My personal favourites include the AA/AAA Spiral Guides and New Hollands Globetrotter Series.

Yes, that's for sure (re Bradt). And they (esp in the past) wrote on "niche" countries without the pressure of creating a best-seller, I guess. And so they have quite a few nice guides for parts of Eastern Europe and Russia (and I guess your region, too, Hugh?).
