Amanda, I notice that in the picture, the doll seems to have a scene painted on her apron. I have a doll with a winter scene, but it was the only one I saw like that in Russia. Are these common?

Hi Barbara, As far as I know, the dolls with the scenes (often famous sightseeing points, churches, or winter scenes, like you have) are usually post-Soviet era made-for-tourist dolls. Traditionally, they would just have flowers on the aprons, in different styles depending on the origin. But of course, the tradition isn't even that long - only 100 years - so we can still be happy with our "scene" dolls, I think!
cheers
Amanda

Amanda, when I was in St. Petersburg some time back, I bought nested dolls of Russian leaders including Gorbachev that even had his birthmark on his face. I also bought a series of Clinton and his predecessors. They were great conversation pieces. Are those available today?

Yes, definitely still available. Not strictly "traditional", of course, but I agree, they're a great souvenir! I've seen Beatles matrioshkas too, they're getting very creative. Or you can take your own photos and they'll paint on your family and friends :-)

I have put together some hints how to make sure that you are actually buying a jenuine Russian matryoshka. This is more relevant to buying on-line, but nonetheless... They are in the Help section of my Matryoshka Store http://matryoshkastore.com/
