Hello Amanda,
You have answered a question for me. I wondered why that ugly box of a building was in that square filled with so many examples of fine architecture. We were there only of a couple of days, to photograph the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) buildings, so didn't get to the museum. But it's at the top of our list when we go back. Are other cities in the Baltic states as filled with Art Nouveau as Riga? It was pretty eye-boggling, and if there are others, we might plan a longer trip to see them as well.

Hi Barbara,
Glad I could solve a mystery for you. Riga's Art Nouveau buildings are pretty impressive, aren't they - they say it has more than any other city in the whole of Europe. That said, I have to admit that Lithuania's Vilnius and Estonia's Tallinn aren't quite as full (although Tallinn has a few - including the facade of its castle) - and Vilnius is better known as a city of Baroque architecture.
That said, of course, there are dozens of other reasons to visit the other Baltic cities - look out here later this month for an article on Vilnius and check the Baltic States guide for other good reasons to go!
cheers,
Amanda
