If you want to take a city-trip to Prague, the Time Out Shortlist Prague guidebook might be handy for exploring the Czech Republic's capital city.

Many travelers will have seen Time Out magazines featuring tourist information, nightlife and help for getting around in cities as far afield as London, New York and Beijing. Time Out has just started publishing annual Shortlist guidebooks to handful of cities, combining information from their magazines with a yearly calendar of events. In Eastern Europe, the first Shortlist guide is to eternal favorite Prague.

Features of Time Out Shortlist Prague

There are four main sections of the Shortlist Prague guide, beginning with the “Don’t Miss 2007” chapter, outlining what’s new for the year, and including a list of festival and cultural dates. Next you’ll find three different itineraries to use in your exploration of Prague – one using the green line of the metro, another using the route 22 tram, and one called “Prague Through Beer Goggles”, a slightly more sophisticated version of a pub crawl.

The third and by far largest section is “Prague by Area”, giving the sights, food, nightlife and shopping information, plus a map, to each of the six main regions of Prague. The information is usually short and sweet and just a little bit opinionated, and the maps here seem reasonably practical. Finally, the “Essentials” chapter covers hotels, transport, important phone numbers, a menu glossary and a page of Czech vocab to get you through the most common situations.

Is Time Out Shortlist Prague For Me?

The concept is good and it’s clearly up-to-date, and festival and cultural listings often include websites to get the really current facts. You also have the chance to go to their update website to find out anything that’s changed since publication. The “Prague By Area” section does include quite comprehensive coverage of the city’s attractions.

The book itself doesn’t appear as tough and durable as other guidebooks – but for a city guide it’s probably tough enough. And of course, they want you to buy a new one if you ever return, and as a result the price is a little lower than the more evergreen guides. It might mention getting beer a little too often for some (or not often enough for others!) and it is definitely targeted at the younger end of the travel market.
