  • Belarus is a former Soviet republic sharing its eastern border with Russia, occupied by 10 million people.
  • Bulgaria has a beach border on the Black Sea and a population of almost 8 million.
  • Croatia and its 4.4 million inhabitants belonged to the former Yugoslavia and is now dashing ahead as a tourist destination thanks to its magical Dalmation coast
  • The Czech Republic and its famous capital Prague became independent from former Czechoslovakia after 1993's "Velvet Divorce"; the 10 million Czechs are prospering in the post-Soviet era.
  • Estonia is the most northern of the three Baltic states and despite its small population of 1.3 million, it's making startling economic progress and attracting many tourists.
  • Hungary was long more liberalized and decentralized than other countries behind the Iron Curtain; 10 million now call Hungary home.
  • Latvia is the middle Baltic State and is home to 2.3 million, a third of whom are Russian.
  • Lithuania is the southern-most and largest Baltic State with a population of 3.4 million and is working to attract more tourists.
  • Moldova is a relatively small country between Romania and Ukraine, but nonetheless there are 4.3 Moldovans.
  • Poland is one of the largest countries in the region with 38.5 million inhabitants and famous capital Warsaw.
  • Romania also enjoys a Black Sea coastline although its 22 million people aren't yet experiencing the same development and wealth as other nations in the region.
  • Russia and its more than 140 million inhabitants span 10 time zones and 6.6 million square miles and feature prominently in world history, and includes the two amazing international cities of Moscow and St Petersburg.
  • Slovakia gained independence from Czechoslovakia in 1993 and 5.4 million Slovaks are currently working on reforms and attracting investment and tourists.
  • Slovenia also belonged to the former Yugoslavia and the 2 million Slovenes will be the first in our region to use the Euro as an everyday currency.
  • Ukraine is another former USSR republic with almost 48 million inhabitants and popular capital Kyiv.
